Sydney Solis Artist Statement
All of the pieces in this show contain something that has been pulled from the trash. I have given them new life as works of art. Out of death comes life. A resurrection. For all my life I have collected ephemera, paper, the old or worn, thrown away holding history until images and textures could be salvaged and recast into something else as expressive art telling its own story.
The Rusty Warren album in “Sinsational” and frame was pulled from the trash back of Smitty’s Thrift store in DeLand, Florida, as were the frames for “Wonderful Florida” and “Voice of a Star.” They live on!
“Stetson Girls” is made from original antique silver gelatin prints from a Stetson University scrapbook that the West Volusia Historical Society was throwing away, but was passed on to a neighbor, who passed it on to me. An anonymous young woman’s college life story is immortalized.
“De la Longevite et de la Brievite de la vie” is made from a discarded book as well.
Dozens of antique cards that a beloved teacher named Miss Olive Gardener of DeLand had received were, too, saved from the trash by my neighbor. Love and happy feelings never die in “Miss Olive Gardener’s Cards.”
“Paper Doll VI” and “Paper Doll V” contain items my late mother bought at flea markets or pulled from the trash herself, and I gleaned from her packed home upon her passing away. There we find the source of all my irresistible artistic itches to create. Out of death comes life.

Nazis stole the Swastika: Now We're Taking it Back for Luck, Peace and Well-Being
![]() |
| Swastikas on lanterns at a Buddhist Shrine in the Dontonburi district, Osaka, Japan |
“The soul speaks in an image,” Aristotle said. The voiceless language of symbols speak to our psyches and awaken powers, like good luck, good health and well being.
That’s the meaning of the swastika, which for thousands of years before Nazis and Eurocentric World War II history stole the symbol from Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. Native American tribes, like the Navajo, used the swastika in healing rituals. In European history, the symbol was associated with Norse gods like Thor and Odin. The swastika is also the pattern made from the revolution of the stars of Ursa Major around Polaris.
In Japan the swastika is called the manji (卍) and it was on maps in Japan to denote Shinto and Buddhist shrines and temples. I remember seeing it on Google maps the first time I visited Japan in November, 2016, and marveled at the impression this symbol made on my psyche. And it had nothing to do with Nazis, but the power of activating the powerful seeds of healing and auspiciousness within me.
| Swastika at a Shinto shrine near Nishikujo Station, Osaka, Japan |
Japan, however, decided to change the swastika to pagodas or torii gates in preparation for the for the 2019 Rugby World Cup and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The changes will not apply to Japanese-language maps, and there is no suggestion that the temples themselves should remove manji from their premises. But it just doesn’t have the same effect, and we are all losing something within ourselves as a result, such as access to our inner lives via the mythic dimension that our psyches (psyche means soul in Greek) need and crave in these troubled times.
Around Japan I have seen dozens of temples and shrines with the swastika. Nazi versions face right and usually sit in a diamond shape at a slant, while the manji version is a square. Japanese Buddhism has both a right-facing and left-facing manji. So think left swastika L for luck and love and R for Reich on its side for Nazi differentiation.
But the Nazi symbolism of the West has usurped the power of the symbol in the East in the last 70 plus years, especially in the United States, making this symbol inaccessible to many. It’s time to take it back and educate people about this symbol’s origins and true meaning, because humanity depends on it. As human beings, our psyches need something beyond just shopping and working. It needs ritual, myth and participation in the cosmos, otherwise, as Mythologist Joseph Campbell says, society disintegrates. And it is! Just read the headlines!
| Swastika on a chozubachi, water-filled basin, used for purification at a Shinto Shrine near Nishikujo Station, Osaka, Japan. |
“Mircea Eliade was motivated at all times by a deep concern for the future of Western civilization, which he saw as threatened by possible extinction,” writes Robert Temple.
“He believed it essential that we recognize and acknowledge the archaic and the Eastern contributions to man's spiritual history while there is still time to do so with good grace. Otherwise, by maintaining an attitude of contempt or superiority towards the rest of the world — past and present — we would bring disaster on ourselves and the world as a whole.”
So contemplate the swastika. Notice the tension of opposites from the Nazi symbolism that has embedded itself today and with the rise of hatred and chaos in the United States and Charlottesville, Virginia as the West declines and the East rises with its ancient connotations of health, well-being and peace in the East. See where those two meet. One thing passes away, the other arises. What has been suppressed, comes into consciousness once again.
Experience the symbol in your body, your art, your meditation, your dreams and see what happens.
And may peace, luck and good health be with you!

Your Mythic Yoga Journey™ - Stories of Faith, Healing and Transformation
![]() |
| Sydney Solis among the plum blossoms at Osaka Castle Park, Osaka, Japan |
The Sufi story of Fatima the Spinner and the Tent tells the story of a young woman who three times is frustrated by life, but in the end she sees that everything brings her to the happiness she has found.
In the Chinese story I call Maybe, Maybe Not, a farmer is distraught over problems that arise, such a his son breaking his leg. But because the son broke his leg, an invading army does not impress him into their army and he is spared.
A story in the Song of Solomon, a King is given a ring with the inscription This Too Shall Pass, to aid him in his suffering over material conditions that are either good or bad in his life.
In the end, all of these stories are stories I have collected for my storytelling performances of Mythic Yoga called Stories of Faith Healing and Transformation. They are about material conditions, whether good or bad, and how they are transient. This has been the story of my life, and I call it Mythic Yoga. They are healing stories and yoga. We use myths, stories and symbols to guide us in uniting us with our true self. It is our Mythic Yoga Journey™ to continue on the path, despite all that appears as obstacles.
For you cannot judge what happens to you. All is as it should be, or it's how things hang together. The good or the bad is just a value judgment. Things just ARE. It is only our lens of mind that brings judgment and suffering. We try to cast out demons, but demons, as Mythologist Joseph Campbell says, are just doing their part in duality. We need story, and somebody has to play each part!

| Cherry blossoms, Sakura, at the Himuro Jinja Shrine, Nara, Japan Cherry blossoms symbolize the fleeting of life. Cherish each moment! |
My life has been that way. So many traumas - childhood trauma in my childhood home of Boulder, Colorado, the trauma of my husband's suicide, a hasty second marriage three years after that ended in divorce and losing all my money, dealing with foreclosure, intense stress, losing my youngest sister to suicide, being abandoned on a Caribbean island, traveling, being brutalized by police in Florida.
But all along I had an inner guide - yoga and meditation, and of course stories and dreams. It was my Mythic Yoga Journey, that entailed me leaving Boulder in 2010 and living in Argentina, St. Croix in the US. Virgin Islands and arriving back on the mainland in Florida.
It has brought me incredible faith, healing and transformation. And now after all that, I find myself in the incredible moment of my life with all I could possibly ever imagine. At 50, I am married to my soul mate. We are perfect match for each other in every way. And remarkably, as life has it, I find myself moving to Japan!
I hope you follow your bliss. It takes risk. I did, and I'm happy to be your guide. Since 2003 I have been writing and conducting Mythic Yoga and Storytime Yoga® workshops online and more. I had my two children to raise on my own, and I really valued the home arts and motherhood as they needed me and the business world is way too stressful to do both well. I sacrificed with bliss for them, and now, as fate has it, I am back on my Mythic Yoga Journey™ to Japan.
For the calm abiding to see clearly is with me from meditation and yoga. I have listened to my story in the body, reclaimed my intuitive, sensing and feeling self by occupying the body and feeling safe in the moment. I have peeled away the curtains of the theatre of my mind, and gained enormous joy and peace in the process. And all my dreams have come true.
That's the goal of yoga - the sage, unaffected by loss or gain. I'm not perfect, but everything is practice. I know more lay ahead. But I am ever rooted in the transcendent as I participate in duality.
You, too, can take a personal Mythic Yoga Journey™. Read my ebook, Mythic Yoga: Ancient Hindu Myth and Personal Story, which I first performed at the Winter Festival of Stories at the Boulder Public Library in 2005. Nobody could understand Mythic Yoga back then. They looked at me and said, "Mythic?" I know now, all has a purpose! All is as it should be!!

Poetry in Motion - Yoga, Myth and the Body
o
![]() |
Wisdom, digital photograph of original silver gelatin print
photo collage by Sydney Solis. Part of the Personal
Mythology Series.
|
Our bodies are poetry in motion. Poet Sandra Cisneros writes that a dream is a poem of the body. Mythologist Joseph Campbell says that the organs of the body are what emit energies in conflict with each other as images arise to the surface in our dreams and visions.
What happens when we listen deeply to what songs, sounds, images and invisible words our body is saying to us?
That's part of the Mythic Yoga journey undertaken at Lighthouse Writers Workshop in Denver this January 14, 2017 as part of a new beginning series that I will be teaching there. I'm excited to bring yoga and movement to literature workshops and share the intuitive, sensing and feeling functions that have been overlooked in favor of the intellect - true yoga.
Using spoken word, yoga, dance and other movement, we will explore embodied storytelling in a disembodied age of internet, social media and virtual reality to bring us down to earth, reality and listen deeply enough to tell our Myth Poem of the Body.

Mythic Imagery and Embodied Storytelling for Psycho-Spiritual Development
| Gustav Klimt The Tree of Life 1905 |
It's part of my personal Mythic Yoga repertoire of stories that have a significant spiritual value for me personally as well as collectively that have themes of reconciliation and renewal.
The imagery in this story pertains to many psycho-spiritual elements contained in yoga and yoga philosophy. When we listen to this story, we connect via the metaphors and archetypical images that re-link us to ourselves via the mythic dimension of our beings, largely forgotten in favor of the intellect.
Listening and creating these images internally within with our imagination activates the neglected feeling and intuitive functions of our psyche that is found and felt in the body. Healing and answers are thus provided to our questions and ailments. "...myths are also profound dramatic descriptions of our interior emotional and spiritual experience as human beings, says Jeremy Taylor, and these myths also show up in our sleeping and waking dream life.
We become the characters, images and elements of the story, as we progress in the narrative structure and through the ritual of listening have a conscious participation in the story. We live the myth. We are the foolish king, who sends his young queen away. We are the queen abandoned and sent to the forest to live with an old man. We are the old man, those feminine qualities in masculine psychology that are expelled from our patriarchal culture. We are the tree of gold, which is constantly flowing liquid gold but always holding its shape of a tree.
| The Cottonwood trees of my youth growing up in Boulder, County Colorado have strong meaning for me. Native Americans saw the tree as sacred and was at the heart of the Sun Dance Ritual |
When we act the story out with out body or take a position of a tree, I can feel immediately the Shakti, the kundalini, the chakras, the tree of life. I am at the center point, the axis mundi. I am the whole world. Tat Tvam Asi. Thou Art That. I am at one with the cosmos, the divine. My body is the container, just as the tree is, for cosmic intelligence and consciousness. The body's intelligence knows the way, we just have to realize it by hearing the stories and participating in the myth via the ritual of yoga.
For that is the purpose of myth, to help us live in accord with nature. We become Solis, the Latin word for sun. I am the sun. That is my personal mythology. And I am always amazed at the images and opportunities that present themselves in my life all because I dared to take a risk and follow my bliss. Dared to extract myself of the commodified trap American yoga has become.
I feel the image resonate within me and it grounds me when I think of it or move with it. The Cosmic Tree is a powerful archetype of cosmic renovation. The Asvattha is the chief of trees and typifies that tree of life which is rooted in God. Great reminders during our secular life to handle all that arises and be rooted in myth and yoga in a world flattened out with just economic and political concerns rather than ecstasy and spirit.
Yama while instructing Naciketa describes the eternal Asvattha tree with its root upwards and branches downwards, which is the pure immortal Brahman, in which all these world are situated, and beyond which there is nothing else (Katha Upanishad Verse II.vi.1). But Krishna tells us that the Asvattha tree having neither end nor beginning nor stationariness whatsoever has its roots upwards and branches downwards whose branches are nourished by the Gunas and whose infinite roots spread in the form of action in the human world which, though strong, are to be cut off by the forceful weapon of detachment to seek the celestial abode from which there is no return (Bhagavad Gita Chapter XV Verses 1-4).
Forget expensive trainings and workshops by flying all over the world. America, always trying to make a buck. Simply sit down and mediate every day and get to know thy self! For yogic wisdom for thousand of years has been passed down in such a manner, for the transmission is a psycho-spiritual knowing via the energy of the image that guides us to knowledge and liberation. It's perfect for modern times. Just to re-acquaint yourself with this silent aspect of your being.
For this is our yoga. Mythic Yoga, using images and symbols to find union. "To transcend profane time and re-enter into mythical Great Time is equivalent to a Revelation of Ultimate Reality. Reality that is strictly metaphysical and can be approached in no other way than through myths and symbols," Mircea Eliade says in his book Images and Symbols studies in religious symbolism.

Joseph Campbell Foundation Roundtable Meetings in DeLand, Florida Third Monday of Each Month
![]() |
| Durga and Kali have been guiding me with myth for decades, helping me cut through tragedy, trauma and ego and leading me to divine truth Live your Myth! It's magic! |
I decided that needed to take time off for my kids and personal mythic journey, so I took a risk and followed my bliss. I left Colorado, my home state of 38 years, in 2010 to travel and live abroad with my kids, homeschooling them with yoga and story. I landed in DeLand, Florida and the wonderful storytellers there were excited to hear about myth and Joseph Campbell, which is really all yoga!
I pointed them in the direction to start a Mythological Roundtable here. We have been meeting steadily at the home of a psychotherapist and includes my neighbors, Tony Foresta and Kaye Armstrong, who were the audio and video team that worked on Bill Moyer's PBS Series with Joseph Campbell The Power of Myth
The next meeting is this Monday April 18 at 7 pm in DeLand, Florida. Contact Bill at wbrennan8(at)cfl.rr.com.
As my kids are now older teens and the Storytime Yoga for Kids work coming to its fullness and all my creative projects completed, the Mythic Yoga realm I put off (took town my website in 2006, will be back soon!) just bubbles up even more powerful, as the body, yoga and stories link me more and more powerful to the inner world and the divine truth within everything connected.
Join us! Start a Joseph Campbell Foundation Roundtable in your area! Follow your myth! Connect with others, especially youth, and let's bring myth, peace and wellbeing back to the world via body and word! I will be presenting more Mythic Yoga programs in the future. Stay tuned! In the meantime, Read my E-book Mythic Yoga: Vishnu's Dream: Ancient Hindu Myth and Personal Story to get inspired by the myths and activate within you realization of your life's unique personal story and destiny.

Know Thy Self: Mythic Yoga Online Classes Start Sept. 12. Early-Bird Registration and Save

| A mythic image has one foot in reality and one foot in eternity, says Mythologist Joseph Campbell. |
Working with myths and the body stops the rational, intellectual mind and kicks in the lost connection we have to the other parts of our psyches, such as the intuitive and feeling sides. Just as in the Grail Myth the King was wounded in the thigh, the feeling function, we must restore this connection to ourselves to provide wholeness not only for ourselves, but the entire world. Because the work we do in the silent depths of our meditation, yoga asana and Mythic Yoga practice is unfathonable in influence. For it is the depths were we meet all in undifferentiated consciousness.
Mythic Yoga classes start again this fall Mondays 8 pm EST. Started in 2006, The Storytime Yoga and Mythic Yoga online classes were the first yoga classes offered online. I took my mythic journey with my kids and lived my myth, and now I am back for the mythic return to share the gifts I have acquired from my journey.

| Mythic Yoga is deep work that goes beyond yoga asana and connects to your dreams, personal myth, imagery, and art From the Personal Mythology Series of photo and mixed-media collage by Sydney Solis |
"Life is pain; life is suffering; and life is horror -- but by god, you are alive," Campbell says.
Dreams, stories, myths and putting our bodies and selves into the center of the universe and aligning it with the cosmos takes us on a journey into the ineffable and toward liberation. It's raja yoga, direct.
The physical asanas are only one step, but the psycho-social and spiritual aspects of Mythic Yoga are just being known as the images from our personal mythology arise and point us into the direction of liberation and ecstatic union with the divine.
